General Elections 2024

No mind left behind

As the election approaches, it can be a stressful and anxious time for us all. Political events can stir strong emotions and create uncertainty. Remember, it's important to take care of your mental health during this period. Please reach out for support if you need it—we are here to help. Stay connected, take breaks from the news, and be kind to yourself and others💙

It's also important to know that every year, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health difficulty. Nearly 2 million people are waiting for NHS mental health services, and since 2017 the number of young people struggling with their mental health has nearly doubled.

Almost half of us are more worried about the mental health of our loved ones now than 10 years ago, and it’s easy to see why.

The Mental Health Act was created 40 years ago and desperately needs updating. There’s been an independent review of the Act, National Mind had a draft mental health bill published, and the bill has been looked at by a committee in parliament – but we’ve still not seen a new law passed. We can’t wait any longer.

Mental health hospitals are broken. Buildings are crumbling. Wards are often bare, cold, and rundown. And people’s voices are being ignored.

We want the next UK government to build a network of early support hubs for young people where they can get mental health support fast. Anyone aged 11-25 would be able to drop into a hub in their local area without an appointment or referral

We also need the Thriving at Work recommendations to be implemented now. And the next UK government should amend the Equality Act 2010, so the definition of disability better reflects the experiences of people with mental health problems.

That’s why we are supporting the No Mind Left Behind campaign to make sure everyone gets the support they need, when they need it.

Help make sure there’s no mind left behind this year, read National Mind’s first steps for the next UK government here before you vote to find out more. Or email your MP candidate here to remind them about mental health and why we all need better support after the election

If you need support with your own mental health during this election, please do not hesitate to reach out to us, call us on 01302 812190 or email us at office@doncastermind.org.uk
