What to expect in family therapy at Doncaster Mind

Family therapy can help when, for example, siblings aren’t getting on, struggling with friendships, relationships and transitions into adulthood, or when parents and children are going through a divorce or separation. There are lots of reasons why families can experience difficulties in their relationships, school pressures, work issues for the adults, anxiety, stress – anything that you feel is affecting your mental health. If for whatever the reason you feel as though your family is not working as well as you would like it to – creating a safe space to express your feelings with professional support can help you make positive changes in your relationships within your family unit.

Before any therapy begins, you will be invited to complete an initial assessment with a member of the Doncaster Mind therapy team to make sure the service we offer is the right fit for your family. This will also be a time where you can begin to explore what changes you think would help improve the quality of relationships within your unique family.

After assessments are completed, your family will be introduced to a qualified family therapist at an initial meeting at Doncaster Mind’s offices. All of your family’s sessions will be with the same therapist. Some sessions will be as a whole family and if needed, some sessions can also be offered on an individual basis. The space provided will be confidential and non-judgemental, and encourage everyone who comes to have their say and to share their feelings, if they wish. All decisions about what will happen in the work will be made together along with your therapist.

Therapy is a different experience for everyone, and what happens in your sessions will depend very much on what you hope to get out of it, and on the unique needs of your family. You can expect family therapy to help you to build stronger relationships between every member of the family and help you to work together as a team.

Please use the family therapy referral link on our website – referrals are accepted from individuals or with support from other agencies.
