Katie's reflections on her student placement at Doncaster Mind

In March 2024 we welcomed art therapy student Katie Wilding to our team on placement whilst studying for an Art Psychotherapy Masters degree. Now as Katie moves on with her qualification secured, she reflects on her placement at Doncaster Mind.

I want to thank all the people that supported me and advised me while I have been on placement at Doncaster Mind. Being able to learn about the assessment process has been helpful for developing my skills. Getting to grips with new systems is always tricky so I like to thank all the people that took the time to offer me support when I needed help. Thank you at all the people that allowed me to shadowUntitled design (5) their groups and gave me wonderful bits of advice.

I relished the chance to facilitate art therapy workshops with people accessing the Settle project (for people who have recently arrived in Doncaster as refugees or are seeking asylum). I would like to thank all the group members that engaged with the art therapy activity working along side me while I developed my confidence as an art therapy student, working in a group setting for the first time. I wouldn’t have been able to facilitate this for the Settle groups if it wasn’t for the help of the facilitators/ translators that were vital in helping me to run the groups, you have my heart felt thanks.

I feel overall I have been able to learn vital skills that I can take with me into my future as an art therapist.

Katie art therapy student.
