Amna - from volunteering to becoming a mental health community connector with Doncaster Mind

I'm Amna, a young people’s volunteer mentor for Doncaster Mind. I aspire to become a clinical psychologist and am currently working as both a support worker and a mental health community connector. In my spare time, I love travelling; last year, I attended a summer camp in America, which was an amazing experience and I had lots of fun I also have a passion for ASMR and run my own soap-cutting and crunching page and shop, sharing satisfying videos that my followers enjoy.

My journey with Doncaster Mind began from a deep passion for mental health, shaped by personal experiences and my psychology degree. From a young age, witnessing my father’s passing and my mother’s mental diagnosis, I understood the vital need for mental health support. Bereavement counselling helped me immensely, showcasing the importance of taking that courageous first step toward seeking help. Thanks to the support I received, I am now able to give back to my community, guiding others on their mental health journeys through mentoring.

Volunteering with Doncaster Mind holds a special place in my heart. It has not only increased my confidence in reaching out and supporting people to make healthy changes, but it has also allowed me to socialise with a diverse array of individuals with various needs. Through one-on-one interactions, I have built close bonds with my clients and can visibly track their progress, knowing how much my support benefits them.

Mentoring with Doncaster Mind has opened numerous doors for me. Besides receiving training in mental health first aid, I have taken on the role of a mental health community connector—a position I might not have considered before due to the confidence it requires. Representing Doncaster Mind locally and guiding people to the appropriate services has empowered me to talk openly about mental health with a wider audience.

Overall, being a mentor for young people is incredibly fulfilling. It’s so rewarding to help them gain confidence and take important steps in their lives. I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone who is a good listener and can offer advice. Sometimes, what seems simple to you can make a big difference in someone else’s life.
