My Placement Year at Doncaster Mind

laurenAs a psychology student, working for Doncaster Mind for my Placement Year has been an invaluable experience which I wouldn’t have gotten elsewhere. Even though the Covid-19 pandemic meant it was hard meeting my colleagues in person, all the staff at Doncaster Mind immediately made me feel so welcome and gradually I began learning more about each staff member’s individual role and the hard, dedicated work they put into helping those in the Doncaster community.

"All the staff at Doncaster Mind immediately made me feel so welcome..."

Before working for Doncaster Mind, I had some personal experience of friends and family facing mental health problems, but never had any real practice in helping those who are in need. Throughout my placement I have had the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of working for the organisation. I have interacted with many clients from providing telephone support calls, carrying out assessments for the 1:1 service, to having a dedicated day during the week where I oversee taking the main office calls and voicemails. Receiving positive feedback from clients themselves, who have said how much my support has helped them, is so rewarding and makes me proud of the work I am doing for Doncaster Mind.

I have developed many skills working for Doncaster Mind that will massively help me in the future, not only for my final year of study, but also as I progress into a future career. It has helped expand my knowledge around working in Mental Health and led me to choose the Clinical Psychology modules for my third year of study. It has allowed me to gain a good insight into the different roles within a mental health service and how each role works with one another to support their community.

Lauren - Psychology Student

Overall, being on placement at Doncaster Mind has allowed me to acquire a unique student experience which has made me more confident to continue with my final year of study and increased my knowledge around helping those who are in need, which I will be able to use and apply in any setting as I go forward into the future. I have loved working for Doncaster Mind and feel so grateful to have gotten the experience.

Over the years, we've worked with some caring, hard-working and supportive students. It's been a real pleasure to be part of their journey to working in the mental health and social work arena and we hope that we give them a rounded experience that will support them to love working in mental health as much as we do.
